I bought my NT650 Bros 3 years ago, the engine was full of water. Had the bike restored to its glory but the engine won't start. It turns but doesn't fire. Have new plugs though. I have no knowledge nor understanding of engines so what can I do now? I am in the TW12 area (if it matters). Thanks!

Does it fire at all and stall, or no firing at all? Is petrol reaching the cilinders? check if there is petrol flowing, just hold the petrol tube over a container and switch on the ignition. (pardon my spelling mistakes please) If not, check the fuel switch and/or fuel filter and/or pump. (Pump can be bypassed to see if it works like that) Are the sparkplugs sparking? Careful when testing that....you get nasty injuries if you get hit by the spark... If it just stalls right away, check choke and carbaretor sync. This is just what I can think of....and I am no mechanic either

Was the engine stripped down as part of the restoration? You mentioned the engine was full of water, so I'm guessing it was. If you didn't do the work yourself, who did it for you? Are you certain it was reassembled correctly? Best way of knowing this would be if it had ever run since the work was completed. Buzzin's suggestions are on the same lines I'd begin, adding that you should also be cautious turning the engine over with the plugs out - petrol vapours and sparks are best kept inside the engine! If you do the checks Buzzin suggests and there's fuel and sparks, have you got the coils going to the right cylinder (no point have a spark when you're on the exhaust stroke!). That may be a quick win, or just another stoopid idea. Good luck with it

‘Coincidentally’ when I noticed this message earlier on there was an advert at the top of the page which I thought might prove useful…..Only drawback is they charge to give an answer. Looks like an American site (see link below) motorcycle.justanswer.com/?r=gacarukireMakes you realise what forums like this are for. There is however, an online Hawk/Bros manual that you might find useful…. (although you've probably got a manual already) www.hawkworks.net/manual/Alternatively, if you can't sort it yourself.... your best bet might be to take your bike to a dealer to get it fixed.

The engine was stripped and cleaned during the bike restoration. It fired a few times but never managed in the last 5 months or so. The carbs were heavily coroded so the screws were stuck but my mechanic (35 years' experience but never a V-twin, only in-line 4's) managed to remove and replace them. The fuel gets there, there is a spark, my guess is the carbs. McF, I have learnt what happens if the plugs are out - November 5th ;-) I also have the manual, thanks anyway.
Surely, it has to be simple, trouble is I have never fixed an engine, have no understanding of its mechanics and no time to learn right now. On top of it the Summer seems to be upon us. No good, no good...
I'll try the Haynes manual for the Honda Deauville (is it how you spell it?), got to find the fault somehow :-)
