help please! just bought my first ntv650, 12000 kms on clock only, looks lovely etc. however - i assume i can only hear it when going slow- especially in 4th and 5th there is a hideous clonking noise that sounds like gear dogs whacking each other, not really noticable in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.fair bit of vibration too on accelaeration. any ideas -sound familiar to anyone.? thanks

You could check the driveshaft couplings, rear wheel is tight / splines OK as the low speed snatch in the higher gears would certainally accent faults in these and the final drive unit. I suppose it could be a gearbox fault but unlikely at that mileage. I hope that's the case anyway. Keep us posted on how you get on. Paul.

If the bike is also clanking on slight throttle have the carbs balanced and mixture set properly. I take it this gets worse when you open the throttle. The NTV might not be the hottest thing on two wheels but for its size the wee engine has torque low down and with only 2 cyl's dont expect anything as smooth as multi cyl engines. This is not a V Twin by definition. In 1st & 2nd there is usually not a problem as the gearing is so low it gets away and you dont notice any problem. In 3rd it can be felt but in 4th snd 5th it is noticable. I have a tall screen and if I hadnt fitted little rods from the yokes it would shake itself to peices. If this sounds like what you are experiencing dont worry its normal. Its simply the engines firing strokes at low rpm resonating through the machine. Operate at slightly higher rpm and you wont have a problem. I still let mine down the rev range from time to time and get it. When I started riding these things at first I liked the way it ran at low revs and was tempted to use it that way in around town. (lazy, less gear changes) but when I opened the throttle everything shaked. There is no real drive cushion on an NTV which makes the problem worse unlike the chain drive kin which have at least rubber cushions behind the rear sprocket. There is a kinda torsion spring thing inside the gearbox just behind the 90 degree output for the shaft. The problem is that it actually contributes to the clanking when the revs at coming down into the 3000 range. Hope this is what the problem is as there is no repair needed. Faulty universal joints in the shaft would not last for long once they start to break up and they dont last for long if they start to seize. If either of the above problems exist you will get a vibration going slowly in any gear whether throttle is closed or open. As I have quoted in the past have an old hand bike mechanic set the carbs, (bit of a dying art) check the ign leads etc and forget about buying fancy oil or other things that are supposed to perform the unlikely if not the impossible. Cheers D

Thanks for the replies folks. judging from replies and stuff i've read doing 30 mph in 4th or 5th will result in the clanking i'm hearing. the bikes in excellent condition otherwise so i suspect it is this - i hope so! going to take another one for a ride and see if it does the same thing so i'll know for sure.

All good advice above, i'll just add... the oil pump chain (sits behind the cluch drum) this can stretch and will make more of a rattle when the carbs are out and the oil is thin, however i doubt this will cause vibration just a annoying tapping at low revs, i would also check your engine bolts are all tight...
