hello i have recently got a new [well 2nd hand] ntv650 . i used to have one before . my last one ran a little lumpy on tick over so i took the cabs apart and cleaned then and it ran so smooth after that
with my new one i did the same . but hasn't made much difference . the bike is still ridable but i like the rpm needle to sit steady when the bike is idling and not jumping around all the time
from what i know the bike has not had a service in years and has spent the last 2-3 years stood althow i have now done about 500 miles on it now
i plan to change the oil + filter in the week and check all plugs are sparking up right . . the air filter is a bit messy but i suspect its something else . could valve clearances cause this ? and are they an easy thing to set up .
and last but not least the exhaust .. for some reason the exhaust baffle has been removed and a plate riveted over the end of the can with enough holes in all fairness to allow gasses to pass out of the exhaust ...it sounds a little odd but not two bad . so I'm looking for a new [2nd hand] exhaust any one ?
any ideas any one .PS : i relay cant afford to spend a lot on this problem

had a close look at the exhaust and it was all rotted .. so i have just put on a good new [2ndhand] exhaust in good condishon . it isnt blowing and sounds better. but is still thcking over the place. so i changed the air filter. and that didnt change any thing either . but im hopeing that will at least improve my mpg . im guessing that maybe the choke is allways running on maybe

I would suggest checking the valves now followed by a carb balancing session. Balanced the carbs on Wee Norman last weekend and it makes a helluva difference - tickover can now go down below 800rpm without stuttering (I've left it at 1000rpm anyway), it's smoother (and slightly more responsive) on the pickup and pulls cleanly from under 2000rpm. What super expensive magical equipment did I use to perform this mechanical miracle? Fish tank tube, a length of scrap wood and some leftover ATF: You're welcome.

well to cut a long story short i checked the rear valve clearances and there wernt far out . then ceecked the choke cable .. it looks corect for the bike ..the only ajustment is on the controals on the bar .. giveing it all the slack i can .and checking that were the cable splits in to two to go in to each carb was fitted toghere corectly [had to take it apart for that] there is still some choke beeing added .and i couldnt see a way that i could gain the extra slack needed . it may not be the fight ntv part but does all look similer to what i rember to my last bike .. any way . so i cut a little off the choke lever iner so it can slide backwords more then it is ment to and thus swiching it off a little . with out doing this in side the left hand controal were the choke lever is , there is allways going to be two much tention on the cable meing in was rideing around with the choke on a little . now the tick over is smother .... and i cant wait to see what my mpg is now .. ;]
