My 1994 NTV650 P has a nasty clunk when I pull away in 1st gear. It's like the gear doesn't engage properly until it is under load then I get a big clunk and it starts going. Once engaged it stays there and it pulls away fine. Does anyone know what might cause this problem with 1st. I'm happy to live with it just as long as I know I'm not making it worse by ignoring it! P.S. 2nd gear engages fine and has no problems . Cheers

See page 2.49 (section 26) of Haynes link below. wbieniec.kis.p.lodz.pl/moto/ntv/manual/2.pdfBut what oil are you using? I definitely prefer fully synthetic for this gearbox. Maybe it's worth doing an oil change before you check anything else? Any other suggestions, welcome....

Thanks Jake, I did an oil change recently but I may have used semi-synthetic. So that's definately worth a shot.
I don't fancy having the bike out of action while I check the selector forks so I'd be interested to know if I am just storing up trouble by putting it off.

But if I understand you the 'clunk" doesn't happen until after you've ridden away in first gear..... I've not had this problem myself, so I think you're right to have it checked, especially if you've not long changed the oil. Lets hope there's someone else on the forum who has more experience of fixing and checking this, otherwise I'd suggest you contact a good mechanic or Honda dealer.....

Sounds as though you have clutch drag, so check the adjustment - what oil are you using? Semi or fully synthetic make a huge difference to the gearbox which are generally rather clunky anyway. If it happens after engaging gear as you pul away, then check the universal joints for play & that everything in the drive train, swinging arm & wheel are tight! Could also be a faulty final drive unit in this case.

I knew before I bought the bike that the gearbox is somewhat agricultural. I am using semi-synthetic oil at the moment, I'll put fully synthetic in at the next change.
I'm fairly sure it is with the gearbox rather than the rest of the drive train. It does sometimes drop into gear properly as I change down into first when coming to a stop and when I pull away there is no clunk. Similarly if I pull away in 2nd then all is fine as well.
I think that the clutch may be dragging a bit but I am not optimistic that it is the cause but I'll look at it anyway. Currently when I pull away I gently slip the clutch until it clunks and 1st engages properly then pull away normally. Hopefully that will minimise any damage. I have used it daily for the past 3 months and have not noticed it getting worse.

To answer my own question... Nothing good will ever come from ignoring the problem! I did the oil change as suggested but to no avail... 1st gear has now completely gone - as soon as I put ANY power on it jumps out of gear. In addition now it won't go into 4th - it feels like something is preventing the selector drum from turning easily when changing up from 3rd so it wont get round to 4th (and therefore 5th is out too). I have had the clutch cover off and I can get it into 4th using a wrench on the end of the drum, but it is way too stiff to be right (and it isn't too practical on the road!). On the bright side, 2 out of 5 gears isn't bad and I can still have fun on the back roads into work just using 2nd and 3rd... If only the glass really was half full!! So if anyone is interested in a 1994 NTV650P (engine never misses a beat but the gearbox regularly misses gears) give me a shout. Otherwise look out for it on the the 'parts for sale' pages.

Sorry to hear about this, Sam. I suppose it's possible the previous owner didn't service the bike properly.... But I hope you find a new bike soon..... maybe even a decent NTV/Revere. motorbike.donkiz.co.uk/used-motorbike/honda-ntv-650.htm
