Moto-GP has been in Indianapolis now for three years, and this year was my first opportunity to go. Having never been before was not really sure what to expect, but was surprised at how much fun it was. The week here (for visitors and locals alike) really starts with Friday night downtown, when they close the center of the city to all but motorcycles. We have been attending this activity since it began in 2007 and each year the numbers of bikes has grown and each year they have had extend the length of the roads that are closed due to the number of bikes. There is a great atmosphere and you can see almost every make of motorcycle ever released, from old single cylinder bikes dating way back to the newest and most heavily customized bikes that you can imagine, and then everything in between. All the bars and restaurants move out into the streets and lots of entertainment is put on for the visiting crowds. As you walk down the rows and rows of bikes you experience a carnival like atmosphere with the sounds of motorcycle engines everywhere. Here are a couple of pictures that will give you a flavor for the event.

I’m sure there are bigger and better events for motorcycles but for me this was a great experience and I have never seen anything quite like this before.

Saturday is time trials, and is actually a great time to go and see what is going on, as there are not as many people there and you can go anywhere within the Famous Indianapolis 500 race track. You can see the bikes screaming by from any section of the track that you want. I have always wanted to be a photographer, so this was a good chance for me to try out my skills at taking fast moving targets. I think I still need a lot of practice! lol.
Sunday is actual Race day, and even though it was great to be there to see the event, I personally enjoyed the Time trials more, I just liked the idea of being able to wander around snapping pictures.
