Hi,
I have a 93 650 Revere (German import) and since the mornings here have gotten a bit colder (some frost) it won't start. It has a new battery, oil, oil filter, plugs, air filter.
The starter turns over but the engine doesn't.
Once the external temperature warms up a bit it starts fine. Any ideas ?

is the choke working? if you move the handle bar lever can you feel any thing, also reach down to the side of the carbs and check the cables where it goes into the carbs, or get some one else to start it and you could pull the choke plunger,s out to see if that helps , if it does not start they may need to be taken out and cleaned, or if it is a problem with the elecy spray it with wd 40, outlaw

I think choke is working, was using it at the weekend and it causes the revs to increase as you might expect. Where do you suggest spraying with WD 40 ?

Hi, I have a 93 650 Revere (German import) and since the mornings here have gotten a bit colder (some frost) it won't start..... The starter turns over but the engine doesn't. Any ideas ? An old trick is to pour some boiling water over the engine (seriously). But I remember you saying that you’d changed the plugs to Champions? I didn’t realise Champion made plugs for the NTV/Revere but the Champion RA4HC are the correct ones. Are these the plugs you are using? www.louis.de/index.php?topic=bikedb&article_context=bikedb&anzeige=0&CONTENT=technik&typ_id=RC33&lang=enAlternatives are: Standard: NGK DPR8EA-9 or Nippondenso X24EPR-U9 For cold climate (below 5 degrees centigrade): NGK DPR7EA-9 or Nippondenso X22EPR-U9 . wbieniec.kis.p.lodz.pl/moto/ntv/manual/1.pdfPersonally, I'd be tempted to try the standard NGK's.... Have you still got the old plugs handy so you can give them a try? Another thing I always do during the winter months, is to raise the idle speed to around 1300rpm....I do this once the engine is throughly warmed up i.e. after a good run on the motorway..... I also find that a 5w40 engine oil is better for cold starting than a 10w40.... I must admit though that like Outlaw, I would have suspected the choke operation to begin with.

I chickened out and switched back to new NGK's (the standard ones) a while back.
I think the battery is now flat, I will try to bump start it later when I get home. I'll also have a look at the choke cable.
Thanks guys.

I charged the battery overnight, went to the bike this morning, pulled out the choke fully (the lever) and it started first time - and it was cold this morning !!! I think the first day I had problems the first few times I tried to start it I didn't use the choke, and I think I probably ran down the battery before trying the choke. I will keep an eye on it in case it's something else.
