Well I finally go tot investigating and it was indeed gunk on the rectifier connectors - both connectors - it was a horrid whitey yellow goo the likes of which I've never seen
It now charges properly - also identified a datatool immobiliser that was tucked away in the bike, still connected and was possible causing drain
She now charges correctly! Lovely - cheers for the pointers guys
Now all i need is the throttle return spring for the carb and I'm sorted

That being said if it doesn't start on the button it turns slowly while it tries to fire up - It doesn't quite get to the solenoid ticking death it got too before but it does still appear weak - battery has full charge - I'll check the voltages again - off out to enjoy the weekend now Thanks to all for support and guidance - I can see me needing more

If you haven’t done so already, you could rewire from the alternator to the regulator/rectifier and remove the block connector altogether ......

You know - that's a good idea - kills the hassle of loose connections
I'll report back once I've checked she's getting the proper voltages again - charging her up at the moment and trying not to obsess about my missing throttle return spring and MOT

Voltages are still jumpy but higher so it could be a dodgy block - I'm off on a stag this weekend so will get time to connect it straight through next week If it still persists then I gues I replace the rectifier? Is it easy to remove? It's in a strange place - can I mount it else where? Is there a reason for its position? Heat? Summat - I'm tempted tpo tuck it into the toolbox pocket unless that's a crazy idea for some reason I missed

The book does a wonderful job of glossing over removal instructions

That doesn't feel me with confidence - is there nowhere else I could mount a new one if I need to?
I'll remove the connector block this weekend and see if that helps - do the checks in the book too
Will report back - When will it end!!

I'll remove the connector block this weekend and see if that helps - do the checks in the book too Will report back - When will it end!! Take it one step at a time... You may not have to move the reg/rec but Everydaybiker seems to imply that he moved it: I have now routed the new (longer) wiring above the back of the engine under the fuel tank which is a much cleaner, drier place for it to live.....You may be able to use cable ties through the reg/rec bolt holes and secure it to the frame. Or just remove the block connector and leave the reg/rec where it is..... Also don’t forget Sickpup’s thread on Charging Systems. He recommends that you also check the starter relay. Often on Honda's Built since the late 80's the starter relay is the cause of starting and charging problems. As they corrode internally the resistance rises so everything else has to work harder to produce the same result....So if you have a charge problem where you seem to be missing 0.5-1.5 volts its worth taking the charging voltage reading from the reg/rec and then comparing it to the voltage at the battery, if different its the starter relay failing not the reg/rec.....See thread below for precise details: growell.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=electrical&action=display&thread=732But if the job proves too tough, then do what I do, and take it to the shop.....

Thanks for the input people - gonna get to look at this over the weekend after I've moved house
I'll start by checking the starter relay - if that's fine then I'll check the rectifier connector block by rewiring it straight through -
My only concern is that the wires are not individually distinguishable (2x green - 2 x another colour etc) so If I need to pop in a new rectifier I might struggle to rememeber what wires went where - I'll devise a method for remembering though.
If that doesn't fix it (after potentially replacing the rectifier) then I guess I start tconsidering the alternator?
Is there a way for me to test drain on the battery for potential loss of charge through dodgy wiring?
Sorry for all the questions - I'd love to get this fixed and start making her pretty again.
Last thing I want ot do is take her to the shop - I only threw it at them cos I didn't have time to do the forks and in the end it was a loose brake disc - fine, both i and the mechanic missed it but you'd expect them to know their stuff a bit more than me - even got missed on the MOT!!

It is worth noting that this is the 600 engine in a 95k frame so there might be a wiring mismatch that is causing the issue as well - just realised that could be an issue
