The standard pump is fine but can be easily upset by any one of several possible faults so I decided to research non electric alternatives and came across these Mikuni types which should work from crankcase breather pulse - standard practice. I wonder if anyone has any experience of these, or similar pumps. I know industrial V twins use a similar type. Food for thought anyway! www.amazon.com/Mikuni-Fuel-Pump-Outlet-DF52-73/dp/B000GZQ65C2www.mikuni.com/c-fuel_pumps.htmlAttachments:

These are widely used by Hawk owners in the States to replace the electric pump. Not heard of many people using them on this side of the pond, but that might be because they're not as easily available here.

Pipe dreams ? Pulse fuel pumps, contd.. It seems I could be mistaken about this type of pump working on crank case breather pulse. they're talking intake vacuum. Not sure that wouldn't affect slow running balance if on one intake only as I found it a very sensitive setting with my atf. filled manometer (a highly recommended diy. accessory using home brew tube lashed to ply backing strip with cable ties) but the prospect of replacing the electric, ignition pulse triggered standard pump is very attractive. The Vacuum take off adaptors on both intakes tee pieced to a single vac. pump line might be good. - - -

Hi Rick, So what do you think of the Facet fuel pump? According to the guy who wrote the PDF file on the Facet pump (telling you how to install it): ...the nice people at African Queens sent me the Mikuni vacuum pump. It seemed to be the answer, and after a few thousand kms it was performing flawlessly. Then it seemed in hot weather conditions I would experience fuel starvation symptoms. Fuel was somehow bypassing and blocking the vacuum source.. Apparently, the 'T' fitting trap mod from AQ did not seem to work. It was from the South African AT Club that I first heard of the Facet pump......jani.iqit.fi/doc/Honda%20XRV/ADVrider%20-%20facet%20on%20Africa%20Twin.pdfActually there are arguments both for and against the Mikuni pump and the Facet. Some people complain that the Facet pump can fail if it’s starved of fuel too often. But the SV 650 pump also seems a viable alternative to the Mikuni. Some people on the Hawk forum seem to like it. hawkgtforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9623hawkgtforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27693&page=2

Thanks Jake for picking up on my fuel pump topic ! What do I think on the Facet ? well it's another electric pump, for better or worse, it does seem a bit hefty though.. Where I'm comin from is that I think the NTV is such a great bike, - since I ironed out the common problems it seems I just ride and ride it and don't have to touch it, routine maintenance apart. My thinkin is that apart from all the normal bike problems ( brakes, tyres, frame & wheel bearings, possibly some electrics, controls) it's mainly fuel pump troubles which are the only fly in the ointment - so I think if I can fit a vac or pulse operated pump, problem eliminated. ( of course a diaphragm can always fail but a spare can be carried) Of course we know that if we do a tube bypass of the pump the tank will supply by gravity except for the last couple of litres. In normal use the pump only works slowly, only clacking away if short of fuel which I suspect is what wears out the contacts. Anyway enough blah blah I've ordered a s/h sv650 pump for a tenner and we'll see where we'll go from there. Looks like its a vac take off via 5mm tapping on one or both intakes and who knows, - maybe the crankcase breather will puff enuff to pulse it ? I note one blogger on sv650 forum had found 5mm adaptors cheap from a pneumatic supplier co. which could be useful.

Cheers Rick, I agree with you. For the NTV it’s problems with the fuel pump which is the main fly in the ointment, (and also issues with the reg/rectifier). Obviously, it’s a problem that Africa Twin and Hawk/Bros owners have also had to deal with, which is why I think this thread is so important.... So, if you can find the time, let us know how you get on with the SV 650 fuel pump, and it would be great if you could post some pictures.....

Hi Ray, good of you to suggest diggin out the facet pump. For me. my standard mitsubishi is working fine. What I'm seeking to do is change to a vacuum or pulse driven pump as used on the suzuki sv650 to get away from having an electric one. - happy biking.
