I have what seems to be an intermittent problem with my NTV at the moment. At low(ish) speeds and usually under gentle acceleration in the lower gears, taking tight turns, or driving through bends, the bike seems to 'kick', with a bit of a clunking noise. I initially put this down to a clutch related problem, but having stripped the clutch down, changed the oil and filter, there does not appear to be a problem here. It is not jumping out of gear ( but will do if pushed hard in second when cold - they all do that anyway, I think it was a selling point when new!), and will continue happily most of the time. Some journeys it will 'kick' several times, others not at all. Does not seem linked to engine temperature. I suspect this may be due to play in the universal joint in the shaft drive, but am not keen to strip it down and rebuild if this is not the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem, if so, what was the cause?
My bike is a 1996 NTV 650T and has done 79,000 miles, many ridden moderately hard from cold, does 20 miles commute daily, on country roads.
It seems the cause has been an intermittent fuel pump! After a couple of stops after switching across to reserve tank, which would not normally be experienced, I cleaned up the fuel pump contacts, to find that not only did the fuel pump pulse more regularly, the 'kicking and clunking' has stopped, so probably caused by fuel levels in the carbs not being topped up quickly enough, but pump working well enough to keep the bike going most of the time.
