my question is what am i lickley to find that i need to replace to get the 2nd gear working . and any hints on if there is any thing else worth replaceing while im in there.

There are several threads that discuss the faults leading to failure to engage first or second gear. I doubt there is a simple fix - it's mostly about wear on the gears themselves. A shame if that is the case as the solution will be several hundreds of beer tokens. Most NTVers cope by forgetting about the "missing gear". I would suggest some careful research in this site and elsewhere before you embark on a major project that's not likely to provide the cure you're looking for.

mine has just topped 90k and also has second gear issues if I try for the 60 yard dash record.
The way I get round this is to change to second and after letting out the clutch let her get a couple of revs into her rythem then swist and smile.
keep it smooth and she's fine. My brother used to hold her in second initially with his foot and that worked for him.
As you will see from my posts I am not that technical but thats what I do. Hope it helps.
Roger.

I remember honda (member...not the brand) saying the quick and dirty fix is to replace the selecter fork, but that's not the real problem. Replacing/refurbishing second gear and the selection fork should do the trick, from what I remember.... But like others, I got used to it by now....and it hardly ever goes wrong. (I wish the gearbox on my car was this reliable....)

well the bike is in bits now and i have striped the engine down getting a 2nd engine is going to work out expensive as i can never see them going cheep on ebay up north
looking at the 2nd gear there doesnt seem to be any thing wrong with it . or the selector arm ... not soure what to do ... should i just replace the 2nd gear cog or will i need to replace the cog it engges in to as well ? and the selector arm? . does any one know how much they are ? or were is the best place to get these spares ? as times are verry hard for me at the moment i realy cant aford much and the idea of spending any beer tokens would be nice but when your out of work at this time of year . being able to ride my bike on xmas day would be enouth for me this year

TO START WITH i couldnt see any problems with he gears . only that one set of bareings were worn close to 2nd gear.. i was goingto replace and re asemble but took it in to a honda dealer to see if they were any wiser .. they spoted some wear on the side of the gears and so makes replacing them with new parts well out of my price range ... and so is getting a 2nd hand engine from the bike brakers around the uk .. im getting quots from 150-250+vat and postage. for a £400 pound bike its not going to happen . that nd im out of work . . i will be ptting all my hopes on some thing i can find on ebay . and have to drive to london when one popes up . as they allways seem to be in london and im shore they will have been used as dispach hacks. but those are my options.. its abit sad realy

It's a lot sad I hope you manage to identify an easy solution that doesn't sting you in the wallet. I hate to say "I told you so" but I think I may have done. At the cost of a gasket set, you could always put it back together and follow the example of many others (eg RJ2Para) and forget 2nd gear from now on

Saxby sorry to hear about your woes..... seems you got a choice... Stumps loadsa money.... Or suck it up, put bike back together and ride it for what it is, ................. a bloody solid bike, that ain't no cafe racer, but that will start on the button everytime, run to high mileage real easy, is simple to look after and cheap to run..... 2nd gear is for posers anyway, real 'Men' snap it straight from 1st to 3rd...... ;D ;D Run it as a winter hack until you see a better one, even a good chance this one will grow on you. Ride safe jaz

well in the end i put a 2nd hand engine in it and sold it . got my self an old vfr750. witch i loved the engine and all .. but sadly it was a bit old and the rideing pos wasnt fro me ..i loved the power and sound that the vfr gave but i didnt need the speed or the pains of rideing it around town . the ntv was better fro me .. just sold it and looking to get anouther one. for what the ntv is there is no real beating it for the price i think

Hi Saxby….. Yeah, I’ve been thinking about buying a more powerful bike for a while now. Maybe a TDM 900 or a Tiger 1050 or even trying a Kawasaki Versys. Any bike I’d buy though, would be in addition to the NTV. I still like the idea of shaft-drive and low(ish) running costs.
