hi have been reading on the Haynes manual about pre mot's and just found out that the steering handlebars or switches shouldn't touch the tank. Mine do,not so much the left controls but the right ones, it says that the cause of this could be damaged lock stops, but i cant can see any damage. and the handle bars original revere ones. does anybody know what could cause this? or how to rectify it ? thanks

hi ant Had similar trouble when i did my MOT this year. Not sure who did it but on my lock stop a hole had been drilled and a nut and bolt had been put through the lock stop. Unfortunately the nut had gone walk about and i had not noticed. failed pre test on this and stupid indicator (intermittent fault) Guy suggested that i simply put a new nut and bolt on lock stop. (the lock stop, stops handlebars from hitting tank and causing the rider to lose control... ;D ) got one from push bike, fixed indicator went back next day and passed mot. Not sure how easy it is to drill lock stop (looks tuff.. ) but it did fix problem. Or Could possibly just scuff it with file and and add liquid metal type paste, but not sure if that will be sufficiently sturdy. OR could get out cold chisel and try to hammer lock stop over toward the front of bike (would have same effect, but could actually snap off... ) Just a few ideas.... Best regards Jaz

Hi Ant, The most likely cause of this is that the handlebar is bent, probably because the bike has been dropped. Difficult to fix on the 600 as the bars are cast on the mount. One cure would be to ask someone with an arc welder to build up some metal on the lock stops.
good luck
Nick

Me and Alan had this problem with ours, seems as though the lock stop had just been worn down, nothing a little bit of spot welding didn't fix.

It may be worth checking the rubber that is at the front of the tank as if this is worn or perished the tank can slip over to one side a little that is enough to just allow contact.
If not the stop is not that hard to drill, had to do this on RH side stop, as it had been bent, and I did not want to apply hammer power to it, if you get the correct drill bit and tap you can tap a thread in it and it is then adjustable for best clearance.

thanks all ntveezer's
it looks like the lock stop has worn down in the bike frame. the owner before also did drop it.
i couldn't get anyone to weld it so i got 2 little metal plates, shaped them with hammer, drilled a hole trough them and screwed them in the same hole where the indicators go.should be ok for now,for the mot.
tomorrow i'm riding.
