hi all, i am doing a respray on my bike and have primed everything but the fuel tank as i don't know how to take it off! obviously there r a number of bolts that i have found but do you have to drain the tank to take it off as i'm guessin all the fuel will just pour out otherwise! any help much appreciated! matt ps. passed my test today with 1 minor!!! now just have to wait til next wednesday which is when its booked in for the restriction!! (i'm 18 by the way!)

Whether or not you drain it depends on how much weight you want to lift!
One bolt at the front and one at the rear of the tank - pretty standard for most bikes.
Turn the fuel tap off, put some rubber gloves on and disconnect the fuel pipe. Then throw away the gloves:)
The fuel tap is vacuum-operated so should not flow fuel with the engine off.
Remember petrol vapour is flammable, every so often one hears of explosions in sheds from "empty" tanks so stay safe!
Paint the underside and weld area and you should double its life...
Hope this helps,
kipper

Congrats on passing the test. in my day I wobbled round the block on a bored-out Suzuki TS60 and they gave me a pass - only 18 years ago!! No, you don't need to remove all the paint. Plenty of advice out there on the web - there was also some in August's Ride mag. But whatever you do invest in a decent respirator like www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=13038&ts=98187the more you pay generally the more comfortable it will be to use - and your snot won't be black after Paints are real nasty chemical thingytails! kipper

thanks! was so nervous before but was well chuffed that i only got 1 minor! it was for speeding and i was trying to argue that its a good point but he was having none of it! i have now taken the vinyl off with a handy tip off a website of using a hair dryer on it to heat the glue up and then peeling it straight off! would have been there for hours trying to pick it off with my nails! here's the site if anyones interested: isymbolz.blogspot.com/2005/11/how-to-remove-vinyl-graphics-and.htmltomorrows jobs included primering the tank and putting paint on all the other panels! FUN!! will definitely post some photos when i'm done so you lot can see what an amazingly professional job i have done and maybe send some reccommendations my way! cheers matt

Hi whiting101. Yeah, you don't have to remove old paint, just make sure wet'N'dry paper scratches paintwork (lightly.. ) to ensure fresh paint (Primer) has something to grip onto (Key onto). (Think of it like sticking paint on a Blanket OR paint on Glass, which one comes off easiest..?) Glass because it is smooth, so paint has NO grip. Your rubbing down of paint will provide that grip..! So take your time,....... let it dry before smoothing out (wet'N'Dry) any errors. best of luck and congrats on test........ ;D ;D ;D Enjoy & ride safe jaz

Hi Whiting, What colour are you going for, or are you staying with the particularly fetching green? Post the pics when done, will you? As we are on the subject of paint, my frame, like most, is the blue/grey colour. Has anyone found a decent colour match in the touch-up cans, without paying Mr Honda's prices?

Cheers.
Oh, and congrats on passing the test. It's a wonderful feeling isn't it? I don't envy you having to go through all the hoops to get the licence though. (Eeh, when I were 16-yes 16- you just had to ride round the block and not fall off)
