Right, this is the prob, both me and my dads NTV's "pop" (almost like backfires, but occasional, most notably when slow down with the throttle completely disengaged), so we thought it normal, but then the other day i saw another NTV, and no "popping" whatsoever! i need suggestions on whats causing the "pops", and how it could possibly be corrected please!

could be many things.. my guess would be carb balancing/dirty carbs, carbon deposits in the firing chamber or on the valve seats, old plugs, holed/wrong exhaust or bad gas seals on the joints, air getting past a carb manifold rubber seal, deposit on the ignition sensor, none of mine do it but i have seen it before on other bikes.. really it's guess work till you find the fault.. good luck

If there is a leak in the exhaust near the exhaust port where the downpipes join the cyl head there will be air get in under deceleration. This can cause a pop. Lean/weak mixture can also cause popping. This could be as above a leak at the inlet rubbers but if this is the case the idle will generally be poor. More likely to simply be idle mixture too weak. There is an idle mixture screw on each carb. If you havnt adjusted these on something before dont bother. If you have the simple truth is that wherever it runs best at idle is where they should be. Of course the carbs need to be in balance before you set the idle mixture. The balance is set useing vacuum gauges. If they are both going ok I wouldnt panic about it. Better making some noise as none at all.
