Hi everyone, my first post on the site. have just picked up a 91 J reg Revere with 46k on the clock which starts fine and ticks over smoothly. Ran fine on test run when i bought it. Took it out yesterday and into second gear just dies, starting difficult, backfires. Happened a few times and pushed home. In the shed starts easy on the choke, ease her off and runs sweet as a nut. Think it might be connected to side stand cut off as can't think of anything else. has anyone experienced similar or got any other suggestions?

Jake seems to have covered most points in his answer – it sounds like the motor may be running rich & fouling the plugs. My NTV came with the wrong choke slides fitted (should have needles on the end, mine didn’t) I replaced them (expensive ) but solved all the problems. I would check the colour of the plugs (should be NGK DPR8EA-9 or Nippon Denso X24EPR-U9) first.. Black = rich , white = weak (check fuel pump, fuel filter, blocked tap/filter or tank breather) then start looking for electrical faults:- Switches (ignition, clutch, side stand (OK if warning light works) or kill switch), broken wiring, especially round the headstock area, faulty connectors or earth points, faulty ignition box or coil or even a faulty fuse – check using a bulb NOT a multimeter (I spent hours looking for a fault in a car with a fuse that seemed fine on a meter! ) Hope this helps – let us know how you get on. Good luck Paul.

:)All sorted. traced to cut off switch wire - was chaffed on frame and intermittently activating - taped it up and all fine now.
