If the carbs have been cleaned and balanced, and the old petrol replaced etc., then it could be something as simple as a blocked fuel filter (inline). www.patternparts.net/?i=125421See thread below for more info….and other possible causes....e.g. plugs, carb diaphragms and air filter.... growell.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=engine&action=display&thread=727&page=1Any other suggestions?

I found my petrol tap was faulty - the spacer for the filter had slid down & partly blocked the flow! Removed the offending bit & all was OK. I did buy a replacement S/H one off Ebay but have never needed to fit it. Paul.

I have the exact same problem with mine, real dead spot at 4500-5000 rpm, but only when i use 98 octane fuel, runs like a dream on 91 octane..
here in Australia the ever wise and enviromentally friendly government have decided that next year, 2011, 91 octane will be "outlawed" and replaced by a 10% ethanol mix,no reduction in price mind you, and warnings not to use in outboard motors , small engines and motorcycles, something to do with the fact that 10%ethanol burns hotter and therefore can overheat the engine, not happy about that i can tell you.
i have had the carbies cleaned twice, new fitlers, drained and cleaned the tank twice and still it persists, go back to 91 octane and woohoo perfect.....
hopefully i can get this sorted soon, arrrrrggggg .

Alan Hi Alan.... I think octane ratings must differ over here in the UK....We have 95 RON as standard, but also 97 (BP Ultimate), and 99 (Shell V Power)..... My bike runs OK on all of them but seems to run smoother on 97 RON. It’s possible the grade plug you use might make a slight difference. I use Splitfire SF416C they’re much better plugs than NGK’s or Nippondenso’s i.e. the bike is more responsive on the throttle and runs smoother at speed. But you can’t buy them anymore....Luckily I’ve stockpiled six packets (4 plugs in each) which I haven’t used yet. When I first bought the bike I also put a Broquet Fuel Catalyst in the tank and I notice that they sell the equivalent over in OZ made by a company called Fitch.... The catalyst does not raise the octane of the petrol (myth) but does improve combustion. It might be worth looking into, if you've tried everything else..... www.broquet.co.uk/www.broquet.co.uk/bikes.htmwww.broquet.co.uk/orderuk.htmfitchcatalyst.com.au/fitchcatalyst.com.au/category/product-reviews/motorcycle/
