Hi everyone and what a boon to find this forum. Thanks! It's Jap import (NTV 600) showing 150,000 with a largely unknown history. My biggest current problem is related to starting. For the past couple weeks, particularly with a cold engine, I might have to press the starter 30/40 times to get lift off. There's the clicking but no go. With a hot engine it often works first go. I've recently replaced the battery and it kicks in with a wallop when the connection works. I took it to a local garage who tell me it's the starter relay and they're getting me one at close to £80.00. However I just talked to the previous owner who says that starter relays either work or don't. He says it's more likely to be the bushes on the starter motor. Has anyone any ideas on this. I really don't want to cough up for the Relay and then find I've got to lash out on a starter motor (if one can be found). Perhaps I should mention that the bike has coolant/fan probs. Thanks for your consideration

£80 for a solenoid? Blimey! I dunno what the difference is between a 600 solly and a 650 one, but the 650 ones are only £35 or so ..... I agree with the PO that the solly (relay) is an item that either works or it doesn't, the symptoms do seem to point to the starter brushes being worn. Anyway - you can test the solenoid (relay) by applying 12v directly across the small connectors - it should click. If it doesn't click then it's likely knackered, but you can always check with a meter to see if it's gone open circuit just to be sure. Check the starter motor by shorting out the two big terminals on top of the relay/solenoid - use a plastic handled BFOS (Big F*ck-Off Screwdriver) - you should get a pretty spark display and a whirring starter - no whirr means the starter is playing up, most likely the brushes are worn - 12.5mm new length, service limit is 6.5mm. DO NOT DESPAIR! The starter motor is eminently serviceable with new brush kits only costing £15 or so - Click me for WEMoto linkHTH
