Interesting Jake - Hang on, It's not a VT :oChain drive is good for (chain) business and much cheaper to produce than two sets of hardened and ground precision assembled spiral bevels, housings, bearings and U J driveshaft and lighter. Single large Front Disc cheaper than double, of course. Helmet storage is very convenient you have to say. Low engine height and under seat fuel, lower cent gravity - more stable at commuting speeds. It looks good, but I'm ecstatically stuck with my old NTV too!

I think what I’m looking for Rick, is an updated version of the NTV with the NT700 Deauville engine, twin discs, four valves per cylinder, 20 litre fuel tank and lower footpegs etc....and still retaining shaft drive of course. In other words, just take the NT700 Deauville, and get rid of the fairing and panniers and don’t turn it into the DN-01. www.google.co.uk/search?q=honda+dn-01&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=kZp&rls=org.mozillaSo OK the NC700 is strictly a commuter bike with good mpg, but we'll see how well it sells....

Ugly, angular, messy chain drive, Fake fuel tank like a scooter / Goldwing, sorry Mr Honda, not tempted. I feel cheated anyhow, I am sure the shaft drive v'twin that preceded the NTV's had a 6 speed box, (VT500E) . And the bike road fund license break point is 600cc in this country.
I hear someone cobbles together diesel bikes using a 800cc turbo diesel engine from a smart car, unfortunately that is also chain drive. 120mpg and 500mile tank range.

This one ? www.dieselmotorfiets.nl/I would hardly call that "cobbling together". This is a magnificent machine ! (Oh yes, it does have shaft drive).

T800CDI diesel motorcycle: Whoa....not seen this Dutch machine before. Looks like an interesting concept, a bit like a KTM in design. MCN’s review though, is a bit mixed: 'The reason for the bike’s low power output (45bhp) is Evaproduct’s desire to make it last– an engine life of 250,000 miles is claimed – and gives excellent fuel consumption (140mpg). Those qualities only appeal to a limited number of people – for the rest of the world, they’re attributes of limited use that come as the expense of riding enjoyment, so until diesel bikes tune in to the needs to the wider biking public, it’ll stay as a niche machine.'www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/First-rides-tests/2009/June/jun0409-diesel-motorcycle-review/I must admit, I like the idea. If you regard this bike as a prototype, maybe it's simply a question of development in terms of a broader rider appeal.....But the price is a bit steep at £15,000.....

I'm really excited about both the bike and the direction that Honda are taken with this new model. ashonbikes.com/content/honda-nc700x-0220 miles from a 14 litre tank is fantastic ! Its like another 70 miles from a tank, i'd be very tempted to have some of that..... If real world mpg does actually workout at 70mpg, its quite a large jump on the 58/59 mpg of the new model V-Strom. I've also come round to the helmet space where the tank should be, no more looping your chain through your helmet and coming back to a nice soggy liner. I think / feel this bike has got the makings of being the "Revere mark 2" (Shaft drives are nice but they're are efficiency losses (however any saving you make on fuel is gulped up with the expense of the £100 replacement chain every 12000 miles) Perhaps they should have gone for the long life "Ribbed Rubber band"

I've had a light bulb moment about this under tank space.....
Honda have got this earmarked for a future slide in battery pack for a future hybrid model.
Remember I said it first !
