My second NTV only 44000 miles, hardly run in. The problem, it fades and cuts out sometimes, feels like fuel, loses power and dies. Checks so far, fuel flows freely past the filter, the pumps appears to pump correctly, flow checked, float bowls have been drained, nothing adverse found. Happened again today, tank 2/3 full, stopped after about 1 mile, after about 5 minutes, slowly came back to life, then got me 6 miles to work and back tonight with no issues. Really does feel like fuel, the way it stops. Any suggestions on what to look at next. My last NTV never played up in 100,000 miles. Any halp much appreciated.

Hi Rich 521 , Yes I've had the same problem over and over. It can drive you crazy - double checked everything including breather arrangement in cap and carbs - as far as I can see there's a device to stop fuel emptying out if bike inverted in accident. Anyway, poked that through and a stiff wire through the pipe. tried it with pump on, and with pump taken off, and just using gravity feed but a bit iffy like that and only works with plenty fuel. I then found a non- original pipe was obstructed with its own lining - ah ha !, but no, - still problems. Have now scored a s/h pump and fuel line complete, it's behavin and back to its old regular self. Have cleaned the points on the pump. They can suffer from flashover wear/poor contact. You can get a diode to solder in to to suppress the sparks which seems a good idea. I sometimes found it useful to run with the filler key in place (on a string?) to allow riding with cap ajar to test if breather clear. Really an old SU pump like on bmc cars of old is all it needs, but all the replacements seem a bit bulky. At least its easily plug innable and outable and get on and off to test. I suppose you know that it's supplied by a relay that is switched by ignition pulse so is no go when engine not turning. Good luck!

Has anyone has a fuel pump that works sometimes ? All seems to point towards the pump, but I did a test and it seemed to meet the spec for delivery. Thinking of trying a pump point repair kit, ahyone had experience of these?

also there are filters inside the carbs above the fuel cut off valves 1.remove bottom of carbs 2. remove float assembly 3.unscrew brass bit that the float assembly came from and the filters are there mark

Now sorted this, although the pump seemed to be ok, a new set of points seems to have cured the problem. All is well again, strange tatthe pump seemed to test according to the manual, but whn a simple cure works, enjoy it.

For anyone still following this story - I think I've eventually cracked it (for some weeks now) ;D Sometimes its the stupidest thing ! It seems that when I replaced the front coil after steering head work I failed to fully clip in the 90degree spade terminal . It looked like it was in place but only the plastic outer was over the terminal - with the spade not in proper contact. It's a bit fiddly to get to so this time I bent the terminal out slightly for better access. The bad contact was causing the pump relay to cut out and sometimes a slight misfire etc. As there are so many multi plugs and connections I went through them using a little Korrode Cure terminal grease on them. I notice that they originally used some kind of creamy colour grease, presumably to make for good assembly and contact.

I've discovered a similar fault with mine. I think it's probably the points in the fuel pump that are worn. My bike wouldn't start so I jury rigged the pump with 12v from the battery and it kicked into life. Wemoto do a points repair kit for £22 and have a nice video showing just how easy it is to replace them. I'll let you know how it goes when I've done the job.

The points are fairly easy to fit though they do necessitate a bit of soldering one of the wires onto the points. Its well worth doing the diode modification at the same time.... hankeln.net/freizeit/nt650v5/fuelpump-diode_en.html ..... this will stop the arcing across the points which eventually burns them out..... they should then see out the bike!! You can pick up a strip of about 50 of the diodes on Ebay for a couple of quid.... they are a bit more fiddly than the points to fit though you should be able to get the whole lot done in half-an-hour approx.
