Hi,
I've recently bought a 30,00 mile 1998 600 which has been SORN for the last 8 years. I've serviced it and put it on the road and it runs fine apart from that the revs don't drop in between gear changes even when the engine is warm. It's like the choke is still on but when I come to a stop the bike ticks over as normal. I've checked the mechanical response of the throttle i.e. it snaps back when the throttle is closed.
Any ideas guys? AndyG

Possibly gummed-up sticky slides - remember that the throttle just opens the butterflies in the inlet tracts, the slides are lifted by the vacuum behind the diaphragms.
A good squirt of carb cleaner on the slides may just do the trick, either from the inlets or from the top down (careful taking off the tops, those rubbers are easily damaged). If not, you may need to have a good look at the slides and the body of the carbs to see how much gummy varnish has built up and clean it off by hand.
Never had this problem with old petrol before all this modern unleaded, effin' all, environmentally friendly cr*p .... mumble, mumble, mutter, mutter .....

Hi again, I took the carbs off and checked their mechanical operation, gave the innards a good cleaning with some carb cleaner even though they looked fine. Checked the float heights and they seemed fine. The bike runs slightly better but still over revs between gear changes. Still stumped. Andy G
