Hi guys, I have purchased a ntv 650, 1995, with 87k on the clocks . Unsure if I have made the right choice of purchase due to the high The issue with it is that it fires up with choke no problem but when warm and choke off it runs lumpy and cuts out. The hotter it gets it just runs lumpy but doesnt cut out. I have a hole in the 'Y' joint in the exhaust so its blowing and popping on the downshift or de-accelerating. Could that be the cause of the hole in the exhaust or is it a fuel/air mixture problem Much appreciated Tosh

Problems may be due to the holed exhaust, that’s the first thing you should attend too. If that doesn’t cure things then it could be a carb problem (e.g. blocked jets) or something effecting the carbs like an old and dirty air filter. The carbs should also be balanced and the valves correctly adjusted for smooth running.....
You may need to dismantle the carbs to clean them and check for a damaged diaphragm...
There's also a throttle stop screw or knurled knob by the left-hand carb which allows you to adjust tick-over....
But if I were you I’d deal with the exhaust first, then buy a new air filter and plugs. If you’ve just acquired the bike then I’d also do an oil and oil filter change....

The issue with it is that it fires up with choke no problem but when warm and choke off it runs lumpy and cuts out. The hotter it gets it just runs lumpy but doesnt cut out. I'd check your choke needles are going home first. They rely on a spring in the carb end of the cable to return the needle into the valve when you turn the choke off, but they can get sticky and stick out, leaving the choke enrichment on. If not, you'll be into a carb stripdown as Jake suggest.

Thanks Jake and Giles for your replies.
I may have found the solution to the lumpy idle. I have carried out all the above you guys mentioned but still no change.
When i had the tank off and bike running i sprayed some 'cold start' on the inlet rubbers and suddenly the rpms raised a bit and it was ticking over evenly for few seconds. So I believe that there is an air leak. Im going to inspect the rubbers over the weekend and providing there are no cracks I hope I can apply some gasket seal on them and re-position them ;D
