Hi all,
I was doing a bit of electrical work (rear light cluster) on my NTV600-M a few weeks ago, and whilst poking about near to the battery, found a random, disconnected wire: At some point, someone has split the black/white wire just before it connects to the upper terminal on the rear ignition coil, and spliced in a length (about 100mm) of black wire. The splice is soldered.
The wire has a boot on it at the loose end, and has clearly broken away from a terminal of some sort. The bike runs on both cylinders (and always has) although it has always suffered from a somewhat lazy pickup and the odd missed beat. These occasional running issues, however, may also be down to fuelling, as both carbs are badly in need of new float needles, etc, etc.
My first thoughts are that a previous owner has tried to improve running by splicing the black/white wire straight to earth near to the rear coil, i.e. by running it straight to the battery or to a point on the frame. The bike is standard other than a Powerbronze headlight fairing - it has never had an alarm or any other auxiliary electrics fitted.
Would it be worth me trying to re-connect this wire somewhere, i.e. to earth? My understanding of m/c electrics is not the best...
Ta,
Niall
