Well the old 600 hasn't been at it's best, charging at 12.5V so today was time to start fitting a new Reg/rec and starter relay.
First problem the Reg/rec has the wrong connector to the alternator so three patch cables made up so I can test it. With it wired in the charging voltage jumped up to 13.9-14.2V. Higher but still not as high as I want so on with the new starter relay.
Starter relay also has a problem although a small one. The connector posts for the battery and the main loom are reversed so so flatten off the tabs with a pair of mole grips and it all fits nicely. Check the charging voltage again and it's back up to 14.92-15.3v
So tomorrow I need to fit a new connector to the new reg/rec, take the rear shock off and fit it in place.

Sounds as though the good news is, you know what the problem is and have the ability to put it straight.
Good luck anyway; keep us posted on progress when you have time

I should do, I'm also the parts supplier.

All fitted and jobs a goodun. Often on Honda's Built since the late 80's the starter relay is the cause of starting and charging problems. As they corrode internally the resistance rises so everything else has to work harder to produce the same result.
Thing is of course you can't see internal corrosion and the way the relay is built it shouldn't cause any problems but it invariably does. So if you have a charge problem where you seem to be missing 0.5-1.5 volts its worth taking the charging voltage reading from the reg/rec and then comparing it to the voltage at the battery, if different its the starter relay failing not the reg/rec. Also keep in mind most after market NTV reg/rec's have the wrong connector at the alternator side, its reversed but these can easily be changed using your original plug and a set of good crimping pliers.

Impressive stuff…..Sickpup. ;D
There’s been a lot of posts about electrical problems in the past (or ‘electrickery’ as McF calls it).
So we’ll probably pick your brains in the future and consult you for parts…..

Second that Jake... Cheers sickpup for posting On a side issue, sickpup. Without it being a long post (Fine if it is.. ) and taking up too much of your time, would you be aware of what other parts fit the NTV from other bikes. cbr front end for example is one I heard, but smaller items as well, maybe footpegs, and the like? (Ps,If you could only post a list, i would happily take time to dress it up into a Fact file for posting to forum? ) Cheers jaz

Hi there, I have an NTV650P on a '95 reg. I went out yesterday to start it and the engine was dead and nothing was happening. I have gone through the troubleshooting in the Haynes manual and all wires have power going to them. They are reading around the 9.6 - 11v. What is this suppose to be ideally? I suspect the starter relay has given up, but it is clicking when the start button is pressed, and there is power in the cables. The other thing is the lights on the dash gradually brighten on turning the key, and none of the lights, indicators, horn work. When the indicator is operating, it clicks madly but nothing happens. A friend suggesting using a thick copper wire and running it from battery to starter motor, and from the electrical diagram should cause bike to turn over if working, it doesn't. Please understand I am speaking of someone with very little knowledge of electrics. Any help gratefully received. Brad

1st of all i would check the battery.. 11v is really low, mine kicks out 13.2v from it's terminals, a dead battery will make the starter relay click but not engage to the starter (so it just clicks), charge the battery and see if it has a better reading, of all the years i've had ntv's going right back to 89 i've noticed a bad battery will give all sorts of problems and it's always worth having a good strong spare.
