I had some welding done on my No 2 exhaust a few weeks ago. A new branch fitted to the collector box for the front pipe (the lower one on the collector box). Seems this is more prone to rust than the other as the other is showing more signs of rot on this branch too.
I cleaned up the box and sprayed it yesterday, and used a little exhaust gum during assembly. In order to cure everything (and for a little personal enjoyment) we went for a spin tonight.
What a difference! I didn't realise how used to the old system I was. Some pretty violent backfire when throttling back and lack of smooth response, especially at low revs (<3k).
Tonight was like the old days, nice, even tick over, quieter, no backfire and much smoother throttle response.
I knew modern engines were more sensitive to even a pin prick hole in the exhaust, I not only had leakage past the pipes into the collector box, but there was even a corroded hole in the top of the box (out of sight when fitted) about the size of a Tic Tac.
Other than the hole, and the state of the two branches, the exhaust looks sound, so I'll ask my local guy (I cannot weld!) to do it for me and consider anything south of £30 money well spent.
I also comment on the correct exhaust seal to the collector box. Pricey at £5 each in Wemoto, but a "Proper Job" and well worth renewing. I had only bought one new one and wish I'd bought two as they're not very easy to get the pipe into a subsequent time.
Wondered just why it felt so d**n cold when I went out (circa 1900), a quick look at the thermometer when I got back showed me why -5C and still falling!
