My stainless steel exhaust header pipes on the NTV have degraded over time to a nice brown chocolate finish (On the front pipe at least) I had tried to shift it, but metal polish wouldn't touch it. On advice from a colleague I rubbed it down with successive grades of wet and dry paper, used wet, then finished off with metal polish. What can I say but it works.
cheers
Nick

Great tip, might give it a go.....
I've noticed that Hein Gericke do a product called Optiglanz Stainless Steel Cleaner for £7.99, quote: 'Even heavily discoloured exhaust systems can be returned to a visually as-new condition within a few minutes....'
It's on page 278 of current catalogue (33121450050).
When I last phoned up to buy some they didn't have any in stock in this country, but I might try again....
Jake.

The wet and dry certainly does work Nick, and once you've done it the old metal polish keeps them shiny. When you've been on a long road trip though, and encountered alot of road crud, I can recommend Brillo pads for getting back down to the metal without doing too much damage. Cheers, Bill.

Hi Steve, The metal polish I was using was Solvol and it had no effect on the tarnish. The last tube I bought came from Halfords. Good tip about Brillo Pads Bill. Someone will be recommending Vim next!

My local Halfords stock Solvol too, although a small car accessories shop nearer to me sells it for less... I am a Yorkshireman!
I had little success getting a shine with Solvol, even when given some assistance by a buffing head on my drill. The Wet & Dry trick sounds interesting, perhaps I'll give it a try when the engine comes out.

Cheers Dugardc..... I've been meaning to try the Optiglanz Stainless Steel Cleaner, for a while now..... If it's as easy to use as they say, then it'll save a lot of time and effort, so please let us know the results. Thanks, Jake.
