Someone had to ask this The reason I am is when I rode this bike home I was pleased with how well the gearbox worked, nice changes no false neutrals easy to get into neutral, well I've changed all that by changing the oil and so was wondering what you guys are using before trying another brand.

Louie, Only just found this forum so I'll introduce myself by saying that I use Silkolene Pro4, 10w40 fully-synthetic in my NTV. I had the same problem you had when I intially tried normal mineral oil, but the change to fully synth. made a difference.

Honda Dealer advised me to use only Semi-Synthetic and not fully synthetic as this causes clutch slip ?

Never had any problems with clutch slip using fully synth.
Silkolene recommend both 10w40 or 5w40 for the NTV 650.
Check out their web-site they've been making motorcycle oil for a long time...

Hi I have had my 650 since 2001 I have always used Silkolene Pro4, 10w40.I use the bike all year to work only a 4 mile journey so I change the oil every 6 months.Do all my own servicing on the bike and it has never ever failed me.

I used synthetic in mine once, mentioned it to a bike engineer. He said he wouldn't advise using synth car oil because it has PTFE which could cause clutch slip. He said use dedicated bike oil if I wanted to use synth (and he wasn't trying to sell me some). However, he did say, that I would probably get away with it because the NTV didn't have enough power to make a clutch slip. Cheek.

There's a school of thought that reckons that diesel-rated synths/ semi-synths are good for bikes. Check out some of the postings on the American oil guru site www.bobistheoilguy.com

Now Heres a subject, Firstly i use silkolene 10/40 semi synth,i personally think using fully synth in a engine like ours is a waste of money, but nobody listen to me cause i'm a tight git !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Anyway to the interesting bit,a couple of years ago was talking to a guy at the N.E.C. bike show riding a Honda CB 500 with 92000 miles on it,always interested in high mileage bike's i started to pick his brains, asked him about what oil he used to keep the bike running sweet at this mileage,he told me and i quote "The cheapest car oil i can buy" !!!!!!!!!!!,i asked him how long he had been doing this ?,he said since about 30'000 miles !!!!!!!!!!!. So this got me thinking and whilst in the bike show managed to get chatting to a rep from Castrol and relayed my earlier conversation, and here was another thing that surprised me,when i asked him what the difference was between ordinary 10/40 car oil and 10/40 motorcycle oil and why the motorcycle oil is more expensive he just smiled at me !!!!!!!!. So i said to him "do you think then i could safely put 10/40 car oil in me bike" ??,and that buying motorcycle oil is just a scam, again he just smiled and shrugged his shoulders. So take from that what you will !!!!!!!!!!!!,never personally used cheap car oil but unless i ever get a R1 or GSXR 1000 dont think i'll be using fully synth in me old Revere !!!!!!!!, Hovis

Hello.
I went from Spectro Golden 10W40. but gear shifting wasn't that good. And when I had to replace cylinder gasket I decided to switch to Castrol GPS and it made a huge diffrence. I would have tried Silkolene but It's hard to find in Sweden.
A friend of mine who is in to car tuning and racing said that thay used quakerstate oil. But I don't know if they do motorbike oils.

I'd definitely recommend Silkolene Pro 4 Plus, 5w40 fully synthetic for the NTV. Gear shifting is improved, it's far easier to find neutral when stopped at lights or junctions, throttle response and acceleration are great, engine feels smoother and less stressed out at speed etc.... I don't drive a car so I don't mind spending extra on oil and plugs for the bike. Nowadays I only use Splitfire plugs because they are better than standard NGK's and Denso's. In my opinion they are even better than NGK Iridium plugs which I've also tried.... But yeah, oil….. I wouldn’t mind trying a diesel rated synth... motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.htmlmotorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Consumables.html

I've got to be honest with you, Hovis....
When I first bought the NTV I was a bit disappointed with its performance as a 650 twin. OK it was an improvment on the CX 500 that I owned, but not as big an improvment as I expected.
Hence the switch to synthetic oil and Splitfire plugs etc., and I found that even small changes made a difference to the way the engine performed, which included uprating the front suspension and using a higher octane fuel....
I think this engines a lot sweeter than most people suspect. If you make these small changes then it's suprising how it responds. I find that without stressing the bike out, it'll cruise at between 90 and 100mph without too much trouble, and that's with a largish windscreen fitted.
If Honda were to make a naked version of the NT700 Deauville I'd seriously consider buying it. A lighter (and less ugly) version of the Deauville, with the bigger capacity engine would be great for me.....

Hey mate, how do you think i feel i came off a Yam XJR 1200 to a Revere 600 !!!!!!!!!!!!,half the cylinders and half the power !!!!!!!!!,although i get twice the MPG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,i can cruise at between 70 & 80mph comftably with me small screen, and i agree about the Dull ville being ugly, yeah ideally i'd like a 800 cc Revere ,same practacality but a bit more mid range !!!!!!!!!!
