Dear All,
Just looking for a bit of expertise and advice on the topic of water pumps. As per Mystic's recent thread on this topic, my NTV600-M has a leak from the water pump casing, which is hard to pin down precisely but appears to be coming from between the inlet and outlet pipes on the pump body, which makes me think that the water pump cover gasket has failed. [edit] I should mention that the pump drain hole is dry, which I believe indicates that the pump seals are good. [edit]
The bike is a 50,000 miler which some previous owner has left standing outside. The engine casings and other exposed metalwork are pretty corroded - the aluminium casting of the pump cover has actually cracked and burst away from the union with the chromed outlet pipe, exposing the o-ring, but this is not where it's leaking from.
I have ordered a much tidier looking pump cover from eBay, which comes with the outlet pipe. I also have a new Honda pump cover gasket on the way.
Unfortunately, I have not long changed the oil and the coolant. Would it be possible to change the cover, by draining the coolant but without draining the oil, or is this going to end in messy disaster? The bolts holding the cover on look ok. I wouldn't normally worry re the oil, but times are tight... I suppose I could try to find a suitable, clean container for it.

Hi Niallac I’ve never had to repair the water pump but take a look at the thread below. The answer given by 'Ilegalalien' and 'Telford' may help.... growell.proboards.com/thread/782/water-pumpAccording to what Ilegalien says, if you get a friend to tilt the bike you won’t have to change the engine oil, but you will have to change the coolant....
